Data Exploration with SAP Analytics Cloud

In the past, data visualization and planning used to be relatively simple. The same spreadsheets used to be updated by various business units for years.

But you’ve noticed how things have changed, haven’t you? Today’s organizations are more agile and the number of data sources as well as business operations have multiplied, making these processes a lot less straightforward. The combination of more agile workforces and complexity of data means leaving manual data management to individual business units via disparate systems isn’t efficient anymore for organizations looking to deliver business outcomes.

New times demand new solutions. So more and more organizations are turning to modern planning solutions to bridge the gap between business units and better visualize data to answer key questions, plan and forecast more effectively. SAP Analytics Cloud solution combines BI, augmented, and predictive analytics, and planning capabilities into one cloud environment to help organization do just that.

When users begin working with data in SAP Analytics Cloud, the primary task they are faced with is figuring out which data to use for analysis and visualization. The first step in this entire process is “Exploring”. Data Exploration is what builds the process of end-to-end data analysis which can be performed in various ways. Let’s take a closer look at how Data Exploration works.

Data Exploration via Data View

The Data View in SAP Analytics Cloud provides the environment to analyze the datasets and models in the system. The dataset or model selected to create a story can be explored while studying the measures alongside. The user can also select the dimensions from the dataset/model to enhance the exploration Moreover, the user can apply further sorting and filtering to the chosen dimensions respectively.

Once the specific measures and dimensions have been selected, the user can create Dynamic visualizations which can be refined manually in following ways:

  • Switching from chart to table or changing the chart types.

  • Show/Hide different elements.

  • Sorting the elements or ranking them.

  • Adding reference lines or variances.

  • Editing axis of the chart.

  • The chart/table can also be exported and copied to clipboard or new/existing page of story.

The New Exploration Experience: Data Analyzer

Currently, the central point for data exploration in SAP Analytics Cloud is the Data Analyzer which lets the user understand and execute ad-hoc business-related queries independently. It helps the users develop structured views of business data and are also capable of finding insights and trends in data.

Data analyzer is available independently through the navigation bar on the side in SAP Analytics Cloud from where users can explore data and instantly discover insights. This starting page enables the users to create new Insights from data or even use the existing Insights for data analysis.

With Data Analyzer, users can connect to BW Bex queries and HANA Calculation Views. It can also connect with an existing SAP Analytics Cloud model and other data sources. By allowing access to other data sources and existing models, the users are enabled to use Data Analyzer in daily work. To see Data Analyzer in action, check out this short demonstration of how it can be leverage for enhanced data exploration.

The results of analysis done via Data Analyzer are saved as individual Insights and are:

  • completely independent from stories in contrast to Explorer views.

  • can be referenced directly from the My Files folder.

  • consist of an Insight name, a table visualization and the context.

  • may be shared amongst individual users and teams.

Further development is expected in Q1 2022 to enhance the data exploration experience by allowing access to Data Analyzer directly from a story. These new advancements will allow organizations to perform deeper data exploration and analysis, improving decision-making and driving optimal business performance.
